License & commercial use
Action Stations is source-available under the PolyForm Internal Use License 1.0.0, plus an Additional Permission for Education. It is free for your organization’s internal use and for education. Some other uses need a commercial license.
Your own organization’s internal use
Any company, public agency, utility, airport, school, hospital or nonprofit may, at no cost:
- download, install and run Action Stations;
- read and change the source code for its own use;
- design and run tabletop exercises for its own people: staff, contractors working inside its own exercise program, and organizations under common control;
- keep and share the exercise materials it makes inside the organization and with the outside agencies that take part in its own exercises.
Free for schools, colleges and universities
Accredited or recognized schools, colleges, universities and academic research institutions, and their faculty, staff and enrolled students, may at no cost:
- use and change Action Stations for teaching, coursework, academic research, student clubs, competitions and capstone projects;
- install it on lab and classroom computers and give copies to their faculty, staff and enrolled students;
- run exercises for their own students, faculty and staff, including course exercises where outside organizations take part as unpaid guests or partners;
- share changed versions with other schools, and publish the exercise materials they make for teaching and research.
Individual students may use it for their own coursework and study.
Still needs a commercial license: exercises, training, facilitation or consulting for outside organizations for a fee or under a contract or grant, including through a university center, institute, clinic or extension program; hosting it for people outside the institution; selling it or bundling it into commercial courseware.
Needs a commercial license
- Consulting, training and facilitation for others: designing, running, facilitating or evaluating exercises, or delivering exercise materials, for another organization, paid or not. This includes a school’s paid or contracted work for outside organizations, for example through a university center, institute, clinic or extension program.
- Selling or redistributing the software, changed or unchanged, or bundling it into another product.
- Hosting it for others, such as a web service, managed service or shared workstation.
- Publishing a modified version for others to use.
Rule of thumb
If the people taking part in the exercise work for your own organization, or join an exercise your organization runs, it is internal use. If a school runs it for its own students, with outside guests who do not pay, it is education. If you are running the exercise for someone else, it is not. Not sure? Ask before you start; a short email usually settles it.
Asking for a commercial license
Email licensing@actionstations.ai with your organization, what you want to do, and roughly how many people or exercises it involves. Commercial licenses are available for consultancies, training providers, integrators and resellers.
Packs
Packs carry their own licenses, chosen by each pack’s author and shown on the pack’s page in the catalog. The terms on this page cover the Action Stations software only.
Contributing
Contributions to the app’s code are made under the Contributor License Agreement, so they can be offered under both the internal-use and commercial licenses. You keep the copyright in your contribution.
This page is a plain-language summary. The license text and the Additional Permission for Education govern, and COMMERCIAL.md in the app repository has the full explanation.
